When you run a business, there are so many things that you have to be aware of. 

You cannot just be aware of yourself, especially when you have a team of people. 

I have had my business since 2015 and I was a solopreneur for so long and then eventually I got people to join me on my team. 

And it wasn’t until last year that I realized how much I am overworking my team. 

How much my team was stressed out when we brought new people on, watching everybody quit. After a while, that’s when I realized that we had to make a change. 

Today, we are talking about how my lack of planning caused members of my team to burn out.

And so I’m gonna be sharing all of this with you in an effort for you to get wisdom on some things that you should be doing and things that you should not be doing. 

I love to just tell people the honest truth. 

I don’t like to sugarcoat things. I don’t like to pretend like everything is all perfect or I’m perfect.

I really want people to just know what it’s really like when you’re running a business. 

So one of the things about me and what we have been doing in the business, is we had focused on one main product, which is our mastermind course called Monetize The Tok. 

It is the course where it also comes with group coaching and all the things.

And we focused on that for two years. And as we were doing these launches, we started to realize that some of the strategies we were putting in place were good, but we needed to add additional strategies. 

We needed to do more than what we were currently doing.

And so that was gonna require obviously longer nights, it was gonna require more writing, more graphics, more of everything. 

And it wasn’t until we had our last launch in 2021 where after that, we made great money. 

But at the end of it, I was also completely exhausted. 

I mean, I was so exhausted that from Friday to Sunday, I barely left the house.

I went to church, but I barely left the house because I was so tired. 

My brain was so spent, my body was so spent and I was just so spent.  

It took a while for me to realize that not only was I feeling burnt out, but that a member of our team was feeling burnt out. 

And it wasn’t until she was so courageous to just have this conversation about not working so much because we had added on additional hours to her time so that she would complete all the work. 

We were paying her in all the things. 

And then she was just like, “Well, I need to pull back. I need to go back to my other hours”

And I asked why? 

One of the things she kind of said to me was like, “I just feel so anxious when I’m working. I just feel so anxious. I don’t even take bathroom breaks. I just feel so anxious” 

And I was just like, “I don’t understand. Why aren’t you having bathroom breaks?”

And she said, “Well, because you need this and this” 

And in my mind I’m like, “I take a bathroom break. Why aren’t you taking a bathroom break?” 

And I started to realize that I was the problem. 

This sounds so bad. But it looks like I had my team so wound up that they had to like go and go. 

That I wasn’t really considering them and their experience, even though they’re all working from home. 

I just did not have the awareness. 

If you are in an office setting, then you can see that everybody is where everybody is. You know what I mean?

But when people are working from home, I just expect that you gotta go to the restroom. 

That when you take your lunch break, you’re gonna get up from your desk and you’re gonna go and do whatever it is that you wanna do. 

That’s what I’m gonna assume that you’re doing.

I’m not thinking that you are sitting 7-8 hours a day and never getting up because I’m a slave driver. 

I started to realize that something in them was saying, “I can’t go and do that” 

I never told somebody they couldn’t go to the bathroom.

I had never done that before, but something in them had created that scenario. 

Going back, in that time we had brought on a second assistant. I was just kind of watching her behavior and how she wasn’t working really well and I’m like, “what is going on? 

And honestly, it wasn’t until she submitted her resignation and she was very thorough in how she was feeling. 

I didn’t like it. Not one bit, but it was the truth.

 And I said to myself, “oh, this is actually a ME problem. This is not a HER problem” 

I need to make adjustments. And so that’s when I started having these conversations with my assistant being like, “How do you feel? Do you feel overwhelmed? Do you feel anxious?” 

And she’s like, “Yeah” 

And I asked why she felt that way? And she explained, I feel like this, and this. 

And I’m like, “Well, let’s, let’s talk about planning. Let’s talk about how you can organize thing” 

And then I said, “do you need a second assistant?”

And she said YES. 

And I said, “Okay. So you’re saying that if I brought on a second person that this person could help you with all these things and then you could focus on this and you won’t be overwhelmed and anxious?” 

And she answered YES. 

But I wouldn’t have known that had I not asked her. 

When I decided to go to a four day work week, which I’ve been talking about before. 

I mentioned it to them and I said to myself, “What are they experiencing? They’re working eight hours a day just like everybody else in a sense. But what could be a better quality of life for them? What if everybody actually got more time off?”

During the time I was planning an off for the whole month of December, I said to myself, “What can I do for them to give them time off as well? Does everybody wanna have a week off for Christmas?” 

When I asked them, they said Yes. 

I said, “okay, well everybody take the last week off of December” 

And they were all so happy about it. And then I said to myself, “okay, what is something that I can do to thank them for what they do for me in the company? What if I paid everybody for the week that they’re not working?”

That’s unheard of because these are contractors and so they’re not working and they don’t get paid. But I was just like, NO. 

And so I got everybody on a team call and I said, “All right, I got a surprise. What do y’all think the surprise is?” 

And they couldn’t guess it. 

And when I said it, everybody was just shocked. And then I got all these private messages and they’re all thankful for it. 

And then I made the announcement in January when I came back that they were gonna go to a four day work week. 

Everybody was in shock and so thankful that I’m thinking about them.  

Because I don’t wanna burn out and I don’t want them to burn out. 

And then, because I’m gonna be going over to the UK for three weeks. I said to myself, “Okay, what if one of those weeks that I’m over in the UK, what if they get a week off too?”

So we all get December off and they all can have a week off in June also. 

And so for me, I learned my lesson about me burning out and then of me burning out members of my team.

Also, they don’t have to work for me if they don’t want to. 

They could work for anybody. 

They could do whatever they want and it’s like, what’s gonna make them wanna stay with me? It’s not gonna be the money. 

Because they can get paid the same thing anywhere. 

And it’s just me thinking and caring about them. 

And so the one girl that quit, I still talk to her and I’m like, “Hey, I still wanna be in your life. I still wanna know what’s going on.” 

And we’re still in communication because even though we had that moment, we still had a friendship.

And I said, “Let’s make sure we keep this where this needs to be and not for anything business related.” 

You know what I mean? 

Because I’ve run my business by myself for the most part, and I’m like, “This is how to avoid that”

I can think about them as I think about myself. 

If you are building a business and you’re building it with a team, I strongly encourage you to think about your team. 

We had a Christmas party and it was so fun. 

My team is in the Philippines, India, Ukraine and Brazil , and some contractors are here in the USA. 

And so we had a digital Christmas party where everybody had to bring their lunch, their favorite drink, and then their ugly Christmas sweater. 

And so we’re all just hanging on zoom, just talking or whatever. 

And at the last minute I decided to do some games and whoever wins the most games will have a prize. 

Now we had this brand new second assistant who just joined us. And so we invited her to be in on this and we had all these little games we played.

Well, the person that won the prize is the brand new person to the team. 

She’s in her 30 day trial mode and her prize was that she’s gonna get an extra half an hour off, but it’s gonna be paid. 

She was just in shock and she was almost in tears. 

But my team was just like, “Oh my, this is, this is awesome.” 

This is how it should be. And this is what I’m learning how to do for my team and for my company.

Not just so they can stay with me, but so they can see that, I can see them as human beings. 

I don’t just see them as someone to help me make money.

So I made a mistake of my team burning out, but this is how I’m course correcting.

EP: 201 Lack of planning burned out my team

When you run a business, there are so many things that you have to be aware of. You cannot just be aware of yourself, especially when you have a

Never use the #FYP in your TikTok videos. 

NEVER! 

I know that people feel that this is an amazing strategy to get your video to have more views, go viral and all that. 

But that’s not the case. 

And today in this article, I’m gonna talk to you about why you should never use the hashtag FYP and what you actually should do.

So on TikTok,  FYP stands for Four You Page, and that is the page where you are seeing content of people that you don’t know. 

So there’s the following page where you see people that only you follow. And then there is the FYP. 

And so we all know that you can use different hashtags to target people, and there’s this rumor that if you use the hashtag FYP or hashtag for you or hashtag for you page, that your videos gonna go viral and be seen by more people.

Well, here’s the deal. When you create a piece of content on the TikTok platform, you have an idea who you want to see the content. 

Like if you are 50 years old, and the people that normally enjoy your content or your humor are in their forties, fifties, and sixties. 

Then the last thing you’re gonna wanna try to do is to get everybody in their thirties, twenties, and under watch your content, because we all know that the watch time is everything.

Meaning that your goal is to get people to watch your entire video, maybe even loop the video, and then comment, engage with you and follow you. 

Well, in that case, it’s really important for you to make sure that you are targeting your content to your particular audience.

Now, when you use the hashtag FYP, here’s what happens. 

When you use a particular hashtag, what you are telling TikTok is to send this piece of content to anybody that has used that particular hashtag. 

And then in my feed, when I’m scrolling, I want you to send me all the content of people that are using that same hashtag. 

So let’s just say you use the hashtag tacos. 

And you just use the hashtag tacos but what you’re gonna find out is that, you’re gonna start receiving content in your FYP feed of people talking about tacos or using a hashtag tacos. 

And you may say, “what is going on? Why is my feed looking like this?” 

You’re thinking that the algorithm is messed up. 

NO, it is what you are doing in your videos. 

So when you use the hashtag FYP, you have literally told TikTok, “send this video to anybody that has used the hashtag FYP or has interacted with content using the videos FYP, but also send all the FYP content to me on my FYP feed”

You do not want to do that, right?

It’s like I am a Marketing and TikTok strategist and so the people that we typically serve in my business are female coaches, female course creators. 

So I’m not gonna use the hashtag FYP because everybody is not gonna be interested in my content.

It’s gonna be female business owners, female business coaches, female course creators or things of that nature. 

And so when I’m using particular hashtags, I am trying to reach my intended audience. 

Sometimes I will talk about how I went through divorce and bounce back, and I want that content to reach divorcees. 

To encourage them, motivate them, and all the things.

And so I will use the hashtag divorce, divorce TikTok over 30, divorce over 40 or whatever. 

And then in the comments section of my video, then I will have all of these people commenting that have gone through divorce right now. 

That does mean that I’m gonna get content in my feed of divorce days, but I already know that.

Going on, if you’re wanting to get more views, more likes, comments and engagement from your right people, then using the FYP hashtag is not the way.

It’s just not the way! 

 

Just think about it. When’s the last time you used the hashtag FYP? And you’re looking at your feed like, “what is going on? Why do I have all this stuff in my feed?” 

It’s because you told the algorithm to send you all that stuff and that. 

I see people all the time on TikTok that say, TikTok algorithm. And I’ll look in their videos and I’ll see the hashtag FYP. 

I saw somebody like that a couple weeks ago and I commented and said, you’ve gotta stop using FYP.

If someone’s new on TikTok, they may not understand that, which is why I’m able to help you.

Why you should never use #FYP on TikTok

When you are going through a hard time in life and you need to grieve, a lot of times, we don’t know how. 

And then the people around us don’t know how to help us grieve or how to acknowledge or understand that we are grieving. 

And so today in this article, we’re gonna talk about it. 

Now, I don’t know about you, but I have been through some stuff. 

If you have been through some stuff, I want you to type in the comments here and just say, I’ve been through some stuff.  

I don’t even know what you all have been through. 

But listen, I’ll just say one thing, when I went through divorce, that was probably the hardest thing I have ever dealt with in my entire life.

And then the second was the loss of my grandma which was a year ago. 

It was super hard. 

I was devastated through the divorce and through the loss of my grandma. 

I’m thankful that I had been in therapy for years now so that I could know what it looked like when I needed to grieve. 

But when I found out that my ex-husband was being unfaithful, I didn’t know how to grieve.

I didn’t know all these different things and stages, and so I wanted to take some time to talk about it. 

So, I’m not a scholar and I’m not a psychiatrist counselor or any of that. 

But I remember when I was starting the process of divorce and I went to therapy, we had a previous counselor that we would go to for our marriage in general.

And so I went back to her because she already knew me and knew parts of him. 

And one of the first things that she said to me was that there are five stages of grief. 

1st Stage – Denial

2nd Stage – Anger

3rd Stage – Bargaining

4th Stage – Depression

Fifth Stage – Acceptance

And I had no idea that that was a thing. 

Well, I actually think the reason why she brought that up in my therapy session was because I came to her one day and said, “I feel relieved. I feel happy. I feel so thankful that I’m no longer with him”

And we weren’t even officially divorced yet. 

I was like, “why do I feel so happy?” 

And she said, “Well, probably because he was a huge weight on you that you didn’t even know was on you. And once it was off of you, you were able to be yourself again, but you didn’t even know it”

But also, she said, “I just need you to understand that this is going to be a rollercoaster of emotion and you have to prepare yourself for that rollercoaster”

And she was right because the week after that is when I started feeling depressed. 

I didn’t know it was depression, but it was depression. 

And so, the point of me saying that today is that as we’re talking about how to grieve, the truth is there is no right way to grieve.

It is something you are going through or have gone through or will go through, but you are gonna have grief. 

And you are gonna have to learn how to grieve for you, not how to grieve for your husband, your wife, your kids, your mom, dad, friends. 

It’s how to grieve for you because everybody does it differently. 

And a lot of times we don’t know how. 

We don’t know how we’re gonna be until something happens. 

Like I didn’t realize how much I would cry about going through divorce as as much as I did. 

But I said to myself, “well, I’m sad I’m gonna cry”

I didn’t realize how angry I was gonna get with him. 

It was a weird situation when everything went down.

But I just remember trying to understand why he was doing what he was doing. 

That was more so everything. 

I kept saying, “Why, why?” 

And I tried to get him to talk. And he just would not talk like that at all. 

I think that I really felt the height of the depression after I moved to Houston a year later. 

But I didn’t know I was depressed and so it looked like a lot of different things for me.

One, it looked like work, because I had to work to take care of myself. 

But I was working and working then what it looked like for me is that I am going to be successful. 

I’m gonna show him that although I am sad and I am hurting. But I’m okay, that I was hurting or am hurting. 

I am also like, “I am gonna show you that I got this without you”

And I did. 

That was my way of grieving. I was just like, “I’m gonna go be successful” 

But I didn’t know that. 

Also what happened was I just started to eat right and I was like eating my feelings. 

Food was never a big comfort thing for me. It just never was.

Now when my grandma passed in September of 2021. 

Grief for me was shock. I remember when I woke up that morning and I saw the text message and it said, she’s gone. 

I just looked at my phone and I said, “I’m not gonna respond to these messages yet. I’m gonna turn this phone over”

And I just laid back in the bed and I just sat there and I was just in shock. 

I didn’t cry immediately. 

I was in disbelief. 

And then when the disbelief kind of wore off, then the tears started to flow. 

And then I sent my first message back.

I was angry. I was angry at my mom and her siblings. And I was angry at the people that lived with my grandma and that lived near her. I was angry at all of them.

Because I felt like I was one of the people in my family where I’m like the strength they would glean from or whatever.

And so they weren’t acknowledging that I was probably hurting too, because most people aren’t self-aware. 

Then I was distant. 

But once I got home from the funeral, I was like, “Okay, what is going on?” 

I didn’t have facial paralysis, but I started feeling my face twitching.

So I felt my lip keep twitching and then my face started to twitch. 

And then my hands, legs and my feet were getting numb. 

And I was just like, “Something is going on. I am highly stressed”. 

And so, because I was so self-aware. I was like, “shut it down”

I had speaking engagements that time and I canceled everything and I just shut it all down. 

And I enrolled in therapy, right? A different kind of therapy. Because I already had a therapist talking about something else. So I went to betterhelp.com and I said, “okay, I just wanna talk to somebody about my grandma”

And we were talking through that. 

And it has been a journey of that but more importantly, during that time I was talking to God. 

I don’t care who people are available. I was talking to God and it was like God was able to hear all of my thoughts, all of my feelings. 

Because when I had gone through divorce, I didn’t know how to be with people or with God. 

I was cursing. I was angry. I mean, I was on a warpath. 

Most people would have no idea. 

I was doing it all in my journal or to my best friend, but the rest of the world had no idea.

And I was just on a warpath internally and just with my journal and my best friend. 

So I learned that God could handle that side of me.

At that time, I was cursing Him. I was so mad but I learned that He could handle that and He could comfort me in that. 

I learned that through that process. But then when my grandma passed, I was just like, “okay, I’m not angry in the sense of wanna curse and curse God. I am very emotional and I’m just gonna sit here and I’m gonna be raw. I’m gonna be real in all that as long as it takes” 

And I just started to do that. 

Now, what tips or advice would I give you about grieving? 

Well, it’s gonna be really important that you are self-aware. 

And so that means that more than likely you can’t see if you’re not a very self-aware person, you’re gonna have to get a therapist or a counselor.

Your friends can’t be all that for you. 

They can be as much as they can, but you need somebody that this is what they do. 

This is their skill. They went to school for this. So that this person can help you through the process of your grief. 

So they can help you see, they can help you process, they can help you walk through stage one, two, stage three, for whatever that looks like for you.

Because even though your friend may have lost their mom the way that you do, responding to it is different. 

So I had some friends of mine who did not understand my grief around my grandma passing away. 

And it was because they weren’t that close to their grandparents the way that I was.

And so they thought that it was not that big of a deal until I was mean to them. 

And they were like, “what’s going on?” 

I’m like, “she was like my mom”

But I had to learn that I was gonna have to articulate myself to people to understand what’s going on with me so that they can understand. 

All the people that I had to cancel for speaking engagements, I had to tell them, “Hey, here’s what happened with my grandma. She was like my mother, and here’s how my body is reacting to this. I can’t go to your event because I’m gonna have a breakdown if I go to your event”

So I had to figure out how to articulate that to people. 

But thank God that I was self-aware enough and had the words to be able to articulate that.

But you may not have that. So that’s why you may need to go to a therapist so that she or he can give you those tools.  

Because if you don’t have them, you’re not gonna say anything. 

You’re gonna say or do whatever it is you do, but you really gonna need to get access to tools.

And so I highly recommend that you go through therapy, but also you gotta be talking to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, because they are gonna give you more tools than the therapists can give you. 

Four of them together. God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the therapists together are gonna help you so much.

And that is who is helping me with the stuff I’ve gone through in the past. 

And then even the current things that I’m going through. 

I gotta have surgery over the next month or two. And I thought that God was gonna supernaturally heal me and he hasn’t yet.

And God’s just like, “so here’s his expectation that you had. Here’s what did not happen. And there’s a part of you that’s very angry, very hurt, very disappointed.” 

And I was like, “you right” And He goes, “yeah, so let’s talk about it” 

And the more that I talk about how I really feel, I felt myself crying and sadness and all that.

And the anger that I didn’t know that I had was starting to kind of break off. 

I didn’t really know that all that was in there until having this conversation with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit to be able to understand what I’m actually feeling versus what I don’t even know that I’m feeling.

You didn’t hear anything that I said today about how to grieve. You’re gonna need help to help you to grieve. 

And it’s not just your husband, your wife, your best friend. 

They don’t have the tools to help you with that. And as much as you want them or expect them, that’s you. You can’t put that on them.

That’s a lot to put on people who don’t have the tools for that. 

They will be there with you and support you but to really grieve in a healthy way for you, your soul, and all that, you really need to get with Jesus and the Holy Spirit and as well as a trained professional.

How to grieve

When you are going through a hard time in life and you need to grieve, a lot of times, we don’t know how.  And then the people around us

 Back in the day, somebody told me that you can’t really have it all. 

They had asked me the question, “Keenya, do you really think that you can have a successful relationship, a successful business, and really be successful in life? Do you really think you can have it all?” 

And my answer was YES. 

And they said, “no, you can’t”

And I was like, “they don’t really know who I am”

So we started the article by asking the question, “can you really have it all?”  Honestly, my answer is YES.

Let me just say that I feel like I need to forgive that guy that told me I can’t have it all. 

Because every time I think about that, I always think about him and it makes me upset.

So I probably need to forgive him for that. 

Well I forgave him after this episode. 

But when he said to me, “I don’t really think you can have it all” 

Here’s what I feel was happening with him. I feel like what he was saying is that if you’re gonna have success in one thing, then you’re gonna have to neglect other areas of your life.

And I don’t really agree with that. 

I don’t feel like you have to do that. 

Yes. Anytime you’re gonna go after something, you’re gonna have to sacrifice something else, right? 

For example, let’s say, I’m going after losing a hundred pounds. 

I’m not going after a hundred pounds, but I’m just saying. 

If my goal is to go after a hundred pound weight loss, then I am going to have to sacrifice eating the foods that do not help me with weight loss. 

I’m gonna have to sacrifice some sleep, some hangout time so that I can spend time in the gym. 

I’m probably gonna have to sacrifice some of my TV time, because oftentimes when we’re watching TV, we’re also snacking. 

So yes, there’s a sacrifice that goes along with that. 

But you still get to eat.

You’re still enjoying eating your food. It’s just different types of foods. 

And so when he and I were talking about this, he was talking about how business focused I am, how entrepreneurial I am. 

And he felt that I couldn’t go after my life’s dreams or my life’s goals. 

He felt like I couldn’t go after being financially successful. And at some point in time, couldn’t have a successful relationship and then maybe have kids. 

Now if he didn’t have good eyes to see, he could easily say that right now in my life, because I have a successful business, because I don’t have kids, because I don’t have a husband. 

That improves his theory right.

But honestly in my situation, that is not the case because here’s the deal, I could still have my successful business. 

I could still be married, and I probably could have my ex-husband’s kids by now if I had chosen to stay with a cheater. 

If I chose to stay with a cheater, I could have all three of those things.

The only reason why I don’t have a husband and kids right now specifically is because I had one and I left him because he was cheating. 

You know what I mean? 

And because I’ve chosen over the last six or seven years to focus on healing. 

Because the last thing I wanted to do was to again have my business, meet a man, and then break this dude down to his brake pads because I’m still hurting from what happened with my ex.

I chose not to go that route. 

I chose that I was going to focus on my healing and making sure that I healed childhood wounds, just a bunch of different things. 

So that way once I do meet someone, I could have a successful relationship. 

But what does that look like if I have a successful business today and meet somebody tomorrow?

Well, what that looks like is one, I have to meet somebody who is confident in who they are. 

They know who they are. 

They know they’re child of God. They just know their own thing going on. 

I don’t wanna say this negatively, but they want a woman who isn’t needy.

Meaning that I’m already in therapy, I’m already working on my daddy issues. I’m already working with God on some different things.

I’ve already worked on my credit. I’m already working on saving and retirement. I’m working on buying a house. 

So I’m not needy. 

I don’t have this need for all this stuff he could give me or whatever.

But he wants someone who wants to be a compliment to him. 

I still wanna be the “weaker sex”. 

I still want him to be masculine and be able to come into my femininity. 

I don’t wanna run the house. I still want the safety of a man. 

And if he has kids, great. 

If we adopt, great.  

So I have to have somebody who says, “I want a woman that is a compliment to me and I wanna give her all of what I have, but she doesn’t need all of what I have”

Does that make sense?

And so I have to meet someone who is at that place now, not Andrew Tate. 

Because listen, Andrew Tate doesn’t know I know how to swing a bat. 

I will beat that dude down to his brake path. 

We don’t need an Andrew Tate in our life. 

But I need somebody who is confident and who knows who they are and all the things. 

I know women who are successful in their lives, who are successful in their health and their spirituality, and they have a man that compliments them. 

You can have all of those things. But you just can’t have it with the wrong people. 

So I could have great friendships but I can’t have great friendships with people who are jealous of me or envious of me. Or who wants what I have, if I have everything. 

I have to be around people that are complimenting. 

If somebody today said to me, “you can’t have it all” 

I would say that’s not true. 

You can have it all if you know how to balance your life.  

What does that mean? So I run a business and I meet people all the time that say, “you work your business 9-5 like a job”

And I’m like, “yeah, why? I have employees. So, here’s the time that we work and here’s the time I’m available to them. So we run our business during that time”

This still gives me nights, weekends, vacations and all that type of stuff. 

Because if he’s got a job or he has a business, he still has to run and operate those things.

And then there’s nights, weekends, and vacations. 

Y’all see what I’m saying? 

And so all of that can still happen. 

I think that people forget that we are in a different time where people aren’t just getting married.

So, back in the day, you would hear all these stories about men and women. 

They would marry so young and they would be together forever. 

Where he worked and she didn’t. 

The wife was at home. Both of them are amazing. 

Whether a woman works full-time or she doesn’t work, both are beautiful. 

But here is the thing to understand, what worked in 1920 may not necessarily work in 2023. 

One because of inflation. I think gas right now in California is about $6. 

I don’t even eat eggs, but eggs are the price of a Mercedes-Benz right about now. 

Like all the different things are going on.

And so to live from a technical standpoint, in general, you need two people working. 

And then if you have kids, then you’ve gotta definitely have two people working because of daycare. 

Even if the wife or the man stays home, that other person has got to be making a significant amount of money in order to sustain the life that you’re trying to have at home. 

But that doesn’t mean you have to work 12 hours a day, 10 hours a day. No! 

You just choose what it is that your life looks like to balance that out. 

We just recently as a company, made a decision that we’re going to a four day work week. 

And we’re gonna start in February, but really roll it out more in March or April.

And so why do we do that? One, I want more time. 

I want more time for myself, more time to do the things that I wanna do. 

And so I said, “how can I have Fridays off?” 

The only way to have Fridays off is if my whole team has Fridays off. 

Why is that? Because if my whole team has Fridays off, then nobody’s trying to message me on Fridays.

Everybody’s out doing their own thing. 

So I introduced it to my team and they were all like, “this is awesome” 

So they would work longer hours Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to still get paid what they would’ve got paid on Friday. 

But now the whole team has Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays off, and this is my way of having time, giving my team time, and then everybody gets more balance.

I guarantee you that my staff will say that they don’t know what to do with Friday initially, and eventually it’s gonna be like, “Oh, on Fridays I’m gonna go and do like this or whatever” 

It’s like Friday, Saturday, they’re gonna get to do a lot more things.  

On Fridays, that might be my date where I say, “I’m going on dates, I’m gonna set up dates, and I’m gonna go on dates on Fridays for breakfast, lunch, dinner”

That may be the day that I do Zumba at the gym, early in the morning. 

That may be the day when I do swimming or whatever it is. 

But this is me saying, “Hey, you can have it all if you want to, but you’ve gotta choose what that looks like in your life and you’ve gotta choose the right people in your life that want to do that kind of life with you”

So if you got somebody around you telling you, “You can’t do this and this” 

You just gotta get around new people. 

Doesn’t mean you need to dismiss everybody and go on a social media rant. 

I’m cutting everybody off. It’s 2023. 

No, it just means that you gotta go, “how can I get around people that actually agree that I can have it all, that I can be all that I can and celebrate that” 

Like last night when I went up for prayer, a lady was prophesying over me and she just started prophesying that I was gonna meet more people who love the light that I carry. 

It’s just so happy and joyful about all the things that are going on and can celebrate me.

But not only that, they will get to know me, not the business but me. 

And I’ve been praying for that forever. 

Because I meet a lot of great people, but I’m just like “I wanna be the goofy me, the Jesus me, the business me” 

And she was just praying for it.

And so that means that I’ll be around even more people that may just say, “Go girl, we see you go girl. Oh, you go to Europe. Let me see who I know I can set you up on a date with, or whatever”  

Or someone who says, “Text me when you get to the restaurant. Text me when you get home” To make sure that I’m okay.

Because they want me to have it all because the truth be told, “I want you to have it all” 

Everything that God says that you can have, I want you to have. 

And that means that you have to get away from the people that say you can’t have it, or say that you’re too much or you’re doing too much. 

So you can actually get what it is that you want and what God has for you. 

 

So to answer that question one more time, can you have it all? You absolutely can. 

You have to find out what it all means to you and figure out what that looks like for you, and then go and get it.

EP: 200 Can you really “have it all”

Back in the day, somebody told me that you can’t really have it all. They had asked me the question, “Keenya, do you really think that you can have

Going out of business is avoidable during a recession. Sometimes. 

A lot of times, what happens with people during a recession is they stop doing certain things that will actually make them money. 

And in this article, I’m gonna walk you through what you need to do to make sure that when a recession hits that you don’t go out of business.

For those of you guys that are reading in the USA, you know that we are dealing with some challenges in the USA right now and all across the world because of so many things going on.

And because of what happened with the pandemic that started back in 2019, it’s all just kind of exploded over the last couple of years.  Plus the war that is unfortunately happening in Ukraine.

And so we as a country have been talking all about what’s happening with the recession and we’re just watching layoffs and other things happen. 

And today, I really just wanna give you some of my tips on what you can do as a business, especially if you are a small business. 

So the number one thing that most businesses do when a recession hits, they stop marketing.

They feel like we’re gonna cut our budget for marketing so that we can keep the company afloat.

But what business owners don’t really realize is that once you stop marketing, you kind of go into hiding.  

And so if you were normally marketing your business, that’s what would drive customers. Whether it’s existing customers or new customers.  

That’s normally what happens to help you make sales in the business. 

And once you stop marketing, you are outta sight out of mind. 

Just think about it. 

There’s some people in your life that you don’t remember. There’s some businesses right now that you don’t remember because you don’t see the marketing. 

Now we all know Netflix, Hulu, Peacock, and then we all learned about Tubi, during the Super Bowl.

But if we think about it, there’s some other people that we don’t really see advertising a whole lot. 

Like, we don’t see Showtime advertising a lot. They’re still in business, but we don’t see them advertising a lot.  

We don’t see Blockbuster or RedBox advertising a lot because you know of what’s been happening in their businesses or whatever.

And so when you choose to stop marketing during a recession, you’re actually pulling back and hiding your business, which could lead to your business going out of business a lot faster. 

Right now, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t tighten your budget around marketing, but this is the time when you really wanna start figuring it out. 

What are some ways we can still market our business in a way that still helps us reach our existing audience and help us reach a new audience? 

That’s what actually should be happening during a recession versus pulling back. 

So the number one thing that people, unfortunately do wrong during a recession is marketing.

Now what can you do? 

Well, if you are someone and you run a lot of billboards or TV or paid ads. This is an opportunity for you to be able to do organic marketing. 

This is an opportunity for you to be able to use email marketing where you’re getting your customers to give you their email addresses, that way you’re able to contact them and all the things because email marketing is free now. 

It costs you your monthly fee for whatever platform that you’re using, but you are able to send messages to your customers on a regular basis, and it doesn’t cost you anything. 

Also, text message marketing, that is gonna save the day as well.  

Because if you’ve got a 100, 200, 500, a thousand, or a 10,000 or however many people you have on a text message system. 

And when you have a new offer or you just wanna talk about something existing that you have, well, you can send one text message and then all these people are gonna be notified about your offer and it doesn’t really cost you anything. 

Except maybe your monthly fee as you’re paying for a text service. 

Then you’ve got social media. 

Yes, you can run ads on social media, but you can also do organic content. 

You know, I am someone who teaches TikTok all day, every day, and your company could be learning how to use TikTok marketing or have someone like us where we can run your accounts on TikTok for you. 

And that’s organic marketing to be able to reach more of your target customers a lot faster. 

Then you’ve got Instagram, Facebook, Facebook reels, YouTube. You got all these different things you could be doing. 

Plus you could be writing blog posts to get your name out there from a marketing perspective.

And you could be doing this through organic marketing. 

So if you haven’t developed an organic marketing strategy for your business, now is definitely the time to do so. 

It’s not the time to pull back.

The second thing people do during a recession is they don’t focus on getting new customers, and you have to be focusing on getting new customers because when a recession is hitting people, everybody is dealing with financial things. 

Whether that is you as a business. But it’s also maybe your customers, right?

And so you can’t just keep focusing on getting the same people to come into your store or buying your thing over and over again if they don’t have a need for it. 

So this is why I was talking earlier, about marketing, why you have to also continue marketing your business to new people.

Because again, your existing customer is dealing with some of the same things that you are, except that they may not run a business or may have or whatever’s going on.  

So you have to be getting new customers. 

This is another reason why if you are restricting your budget a little bit but then you can use organic marketing to be able to reach your existing customers and your new customers.

So that’s number two.

The third way to avoid having issues with going out of business during a recession is to make sure that you go ahead and cut some unnecessary expenses that you can add in later. 

So what does that mean? 

Again, I shared that one of the reasons why people go out of business is because they don’t market, but it’s also because they don’t cut unnecessary expenses.

Right now, marketing is necessary. 

For example, we’re a small business and we have subscriptions where we pay for a podcast player, whether it is a software or whatever it is. 

Now, before we actually have these financial troubles, my job is to look at what all we are spending our money on? 

Like what’s going out the door on a regular basis and what is it that we are using and not using? 

Like I found something that was a thousand dollars a year and I was like, “we don’t use that” 

And we use DropBox for our files and we had an old employee have access to that Dropbox folder. 

Right now it was through her company email, so once she left, she was still just there taking up space and costing us per person to be in Dropbox. 

We also use Slack for our employees, and so it’s our job to go. “Okay. let’s remove people from Slack that are no longer with the company that are taking up space, but also costing us to have a seat in Slack”

So if you haven’t really looked at what you are spending your money on as a business owner, I suggest you should really look at those things. 

It’s like where you actually have money that can be in the bank versus constantly going out, right?

I know myself as a person. All the time, I’m always like, “okay, am I going to that gym or am I using the gym that is at my apartment complex?” 

I’m using the gym at my apartment complex. 

“Am I really watching Netflix and Hulu and HBO or am I just watching HBO”

And when I really look at that, I go, “Okay, I’m just watching this and this. Cancel that”

And so those are some of the things we should be doing anyway to just avoid paying for unnecessary things over and over again. 

That we don’t have to or we shouldn’t be doing. 

That could really help you as a person, but also as a business as we are dealing with the recession here in the United States.

And so, that’s it. 

I just want to give you some tips on what you should be doing or what some of your friends or whomever should be doing during a recession to keep from going out of business.

Why Companies Go Out of Business During a Recession

 The Grammys happened a couple of weeks ago and everybody is going crazy. 

Not as crazy as when Lil Nas X came out with the song Call Me by Your Name and when he had the Satan Shoes from Nike.

It wasn’t nowhere near as bad as what happened with Lil Nas X, but the Christian community went crazy. 

And not just because of Sam Smith and his performance, but also because Maverick City Music was there, labor award and all this type of stuff. 

So I want to talk about the Grammys and we’re talking about Sam Smith, Maverick City Music and all the things. 

Now, the first thing I will say is I didn’t watch it. 

I haven’t watched music shows in a long time just because they don’t really interest me. 

If Michael Jackson was alive, I’d be there. 

If Janet Jackson came back on and did a performance. I’m there. 

Why? Because I have always loved them.

Okay. So, I didn’t watch it, but as it was happening, I’m all over TikTok and all the social media. 

I was watching people just go crazy. 

And then the next day, the social media and everything was just nuts because apparently Sam Smith came out with like “let’s worship”

That was his tweet or something like that, and the people were like, “we’re gonna worship Satan together, or whatever” 

He did his performance, it isn’t a Christian like or whatever and it did not say that he is a confessed Christian but it was like “me, I’m the devil, worship me” or whatever. With all the red stuff and all the different things.

Of course he is not in a hetero relationship or he’s not hetero or whatever. 

The Christian community went wild.  

It reminds me of girls going wild, but not quite. 

And as I was watching people. 

Honestly, I wasn’t surprised to see Christians be outraged by it. 

I wasn’t surprised to see people fighting on social media about it. 

But I will say that I’m always disturbed. I’m always disappointed. 

And I am like that. 

I’m a Christian. I love Jesus and all the things, right?

I don’t worship the devil. We beat demons. So I’m not about that life whatsoever. 

I’m not about the performance that he gave. 

But I say this all the time here on the episodes, that I think that as Christians, we need to do a better job of being good quality Christians. 

So what do I mean when I say that? 

Here’s the deal I saw on social media the next day, what he did and how he did it. 

I remember when Little Nas X was doing what he was doing, he was doing a lap dance with the devil and all the things. 

I remember all that and you know, where I kind of went with, it was like, “okay, these are people who are choosing to take this time to do this”

This is what they have chosen to do in this time that they have been given. 

And I say to myself, “okay, I think there is a reason why he or they have chosen to do this when they got all the eyes of the world on them, there is a reason why they chose to do this” 

And you know, whatever that agenda is, there’s a reason they chose to do it.

But for me, I don’t go into outrage on social media. 

I just don’t go into social media the way that people do.  

I kind of go to a place of like, “oh man, I wonder what is actually happening with him? I wonder what he’s actually feeling? I wonder what he’s thinking when everybody’s talking about what he did”

I wonder how he really feels when the lights are down, when nobody’s around and when he thinks about God and his relationship with God.  

What does he think about as it pertains to heaven or hell? Like what does he think and feel? 

And I wonder what his thoughts are about Jesus? 

Like what is happening with him? 

And not to say this is his case, but a lot of times people have been hurt by “God”, “Christian”, the Church and all that. 

And so, sometimes when people do that, they resort to going all the way over here and doing all the way of what they’re doing over here. 

But not really realizing, them having this outward display or this rage or whatever is actually not helping them. 

It’s actually hurting them even more, because it’s not getting them any closer to God than where they were before they did that. 

But it reminds me of when you get hurt in a relationship. 

Everybody does different things when they get hurt in a relationship based upon their maturity.

And people just choose to do what they choose to do when that happens. Right?

So when I think about Sam Smith and the Grammys, for me it mostly makes me sad. 

It doesn’t make me feel outraged. It just makes me feel sad. 

It makes me feel like, “oh man, I wish he and I were friends”

Where I could be like, “Hey, how was it? How did you feel? How do you feel now? What is your relationship with God like? How do you feel about the devil?” 

I wish I could be his friend so that I could literally just ask him questions. 

Not to give him answers, but just to ask him questions. 

So just to know how he feels and what he thinks.

Same thing with Lil Nas X. He came out with and was talking about how he felt like he was homosexual and as a kid, the church did all this stuff and said all this stuff.  

And then he’s just like, basically F the church or whatever. 

But there’s still this longing for his relationship with God. 

So it’s like, I think that we as Christians, we’re missing the point. 

The point of going out and making disciples. 

Because truth be told, everybody needs Jesus. Everybody needs love. Everybody needs a hug. 

I just saw this mug in my office and it says, hug and a mug. And I think everybody needs a hug including Sam Smith. 

And I just think that we’re just not doing it right.

I think about what happened with Dante Bowe of Maverick City Music. 

I can’t remember exactly what happened to him, but I think a video surfaced of him. 

I think he was drunk on a party bus rapping some rap music and it went viral. 

And then everybody’s like, “crucify Dante Bowe or whatever”

And then when Maverick City Music comes out and says, “Hey, we have parted ways with Dante Bowe” 

They crucified Maverick City Music. 

But I think people are missing the whole point.  

The whole point of nobody’s perfect. But when stuff arises, I think we missed the point of, “what should we do next?”

Is it where we go on social media and express our outrage? 

What are we supposed to do? 

I think what we’re actually supposed to do is pray.  

But I think we do more of this than we do praying and I’ve been guilty. 

Hands down. But that’s just what I feel.

I feel like we just missed the point of it all. To pray and not to lash. 

I remember when Roe versus Wade was overturned and the Christians were like, “Yeah!!!” 

I get it. 

I’m not for abortion either. I am pro-life.

But I think we also missed a point even in that. 

So here is this thing that is happening and this group of people feels like, “my body, my choice” 

And they had this right taken from them. And then all the triple down. 

I think that we as Christians miss the point of like, pause and not say anything. Or don’t do anything. 

Just pray. 

When it happened and I found out, I felt sadness and just I felt indifferent. 

And I said, “why do I feel indifferent? I’m not pro-life” 

And then I felt God said, “it’s because you feel how I feel”

And I’m like, “well, why do you feel indifferent?” 

And he’s like, “well, I’m pro-life. I’m not pro-choice, but I also am pro my people. And right now there’s a group of people that feel stripped. They feel heartbroken. They feel all these different things”

And I know in the Bible it says, you’re supposed to celebrate with those that celebrate and then mourn with those that mourn.  

I think that it was a time for us to recognize, “hey, while we believe in pro-life, there’s also this group of people that are like, what am I going to do?”

And whatever thing that they’re thinking in their minds. 

Whether they’re thinking right or wrong, there’s this opportunity. 

It’s kind of like when you find out somebody is pregnant and has an abortion. 

It’s easy to be outraged that the person had an abortion, but also this person just ended a life that was growing in them. 

And while they may be feeling this, they probably also will feel something else. 

I think that we’re missing the point there. 

We’re missing the vote there. 

And so when I think about the Grammys and Christians, I just feel like we just do such a bad job of loving people.

I just feel we’ve become these keyboard monsters where we just post things on social media where we just get so outraged. 

But what are we doing to actually get love? It’s just sad. 

I always have this indifference to how I feel about all the things.

I want people to be saved. I want people to go to heaven. I want people to have a relationship with God and Jesus. 

And I don’t want people to have to choose God because otherwise we tell them they’re gonna go to hell. 

I have friends that are into all types of things and I’m just not like that.

I am A and you are B, you know it. Right? 

The door is open for when you have questions about A. 

I had some friends for the longest time that would not talk to me about God. 

But they always knew. They always watch and they just know me and how I am. 

They just do. 

And eventually a time came when desperation, something was happening and they came to me and.

“I need prayer. We need prayer. This is going on” 

I said, “okay, let’s go” 

And then I just went into my journey of what I do. You know what I mean? 

Because I left that door open, I never made them come to me, I just let them be. 

And when the time came and they were looking for me, I was like, “oh yeah, come on”

And so if you’re a Christian and you’re reading this, I would encourage you that the next time something happens. 

Before you act or say something. 

Just do this quick pause and go, “Okay. Here is a scenario: Here are X, Y, and Z, but what about A, B, and C?” 

And then especially if people are involved. 

Think about the people, think about how you can be Jesus for the people. 

Does that make sense? 

I do wanna know what you think. What are your thoughts and feelings about the Christians and the Grammys and Sam Smith, Lil Nas X.

Christians vs The Grammys

 The Grammys happened a couple of weeks ago and everybody is going crazy.  Not as crazy as when Lil Nas X came out with the song Call Me by

 If you’re gonna have success as a business owner, you need to have some type of community. 

Now I’m gonna talk about two different types of community in this article. 

But you need some type of community because otherwise it can just get really hard and be really lonely. Not to mention if you were from home and you had one of those private offices. Kinda like what I do. 

So today we’re talking about community and why you should build a community. But I’m gonna talk about this in the space of like, “I need a community right now”

My disclaimer is I always talk to you all about things that I’m in a process of doing or have done. 

And so this is kind of where we are today. 

Again, we’re talking about this from two different angles. 

One angle is from needing community for you as it pertains to entrepreneurs, business owners, and all that type of stuff.

But the second type of community that we’re talking about is people that love what it is you do and not only do you help them, but they also help each other. 

Four years ago I moved from Houston, Texas to Redding, California. 

Now, prior to moving to Houston, I lived in Richmond, Virginia for eight years.

And then prior to moving to Richmond, I lived in Kentucky. 

So most of the people that I’ve always known have been in Kentucky. 

And then when I was building my business in Virginia, I was there for eight years, got married, divorced, and all the things, but you just wanna leave the past.

When you move, it’s just not just your city, but like a state, you lose a lot of friends. 

You lose a lot of community. 

And I don’t think that it’s always because people don’t care about you. It’s kind of like the out of sight out of mind type of thing. 

Where now you’re over here and their life is still going on where it was before.

And so you lose people and you lose touch with people when you move. 

Unfortunately, I’ve moved a few times. I love just being in new environments or whatever. 

I like staying put, but sometimes when God asks me to go somewhere, I just go. 

And so I’ve moved a bunch of times actually. And that means I have lost community.

I’ve lost my friends. 

And so then when you move again, now you’re restarting. 

And so for me, when I moved to California, that was the biggest move. 

Moving from Texas all the way to California. 

And I didn’t know anybody here. But I did because God asked me to. 

And so then I started living in Redding, California for a while.

And then of course COVID hit. 

And so when COVID hit, a lot of us lost all types of community because we were now all just kind of locked into our little small environments. 

We weren’t really traveling as much. 

And two years later I moved down here to San Diego, which I absolutely love. 

When I was moving to San Diego, I said to myself, “I wanna make sure that I move into an apartment complex where there’s a lot of people”

That is where I can meet people and build community, which I did. 

And I started connecting with people or trying to at least. 

But one of the things about running a business and running a virtual business is you work by yourself. 

I am a content creator, so I need to be in a space by myself, somebody who’s not on the phone, not texting, not talking, because I create content and do all the things in my space.

And so that limits me with the amount of people that I’m exposed to all the time. 

And then when I moved to San Diego, there weren’t a lot of networking events or events going on in general. 

So I’m definitely not able to meet more people at all. 

So it has been a journey. It has been a very lonely journey especially the last two years because of COVID and then I’m just doing all the things. 

I think it was less than a year ago when somebody had talked to me about this organization called Entrepreneurs Organization. 

It also has something called EOA and they accelerated a group for people.

Because EO is basically where you have to make a million dollars a year or you can be an EOA where you’re almost at a million dollars or what have you.

And so I met somebody at a pool party that introduced me to EO.  

And I have slowly started to kind of develop relationships and connect with people, but it’s a process and it can be very lonely. 

It was just yesterday, when my mentor from EOA connected me to a guy who owns a digital marketing agency. 

And it’s like a $50 million agency and he has TikTok as part of his agency. 

Now, that is the first time in the last years that God has had me on TikTok that I’ve ever been able to talk to somebody who understands what I’m doing. 

Who understands why I’m doing or who understands where things are going. 

First time ever. 

And I was just like, “oh my God” 

I did not know that I needed that. 

That I needed to have a conversation like that. But I did. 

It’s not just reassuring, but it’s also like you’re just able to just have conversations with a person who just gets it. 

And when I think about having community as it pertains to my own needs, It’s really important to have people around you who understand what you’re doing.

So I pay for a Mastermind. It’s like $20,000. 

A lot of money, I know. 

And a lot of them are on that journey of doing the same things that I’m doing.  

Like building their businesses and all that. 

It’s nice to have people around me who are doing it, who have the same type of struggles. 

They’re doing something different, but it’s the same digital marketing.

It’s very reassuring to be around people like that. 

I’m not against my friends that have jobs. 

It’s like, “hey, it’s cool. It’s no big deal” 

But when you run a business, you’re able to have different conversations. 

So the other day, I was talking to my best friend about how much money we spend out every single month, and she was in shock.

And I said, “Well, just because we spend that much money doesn’t mean I’m making all this crazy money” 

It took a minute for her to connect with like in order for you to have employees, you gotta make enough money to pay these employees. 

And so there’s different stresses when you’re running a full business.

It’s a blessing, but it’s more stressful, you know what I mean? 

And so having people around me who understand taxes, contractors, payroll, or the other different things that I may not understand is really good for the soul. 

Now, for the second type of community. Let’s just say “you are a digital marketer. 

You are a coach or course creator. 

Similar to what it is that I do. 

It is important that you learn how to build a community of followers. 

I hate saying the following word, but when I explain, you’ll understand. 

It’s important to build a community of followers. 

People who, like they may watch you online, connect with you online, and they may buy into a program or they’re just online so they could be a student of yours and it could be with just following you.

And it’s important that you start developing these relationships with people online because you have a community. 

So I’ll give you an example. 

I am headed to New Castle England, London, Paris, and Rome this summer. And I’m gonna be speaking on TikTok and connecting with TikTok Paris when I’m there.

And for me, one of the things that I am doing is when I get over there, I wanna already have people that I have met before I got there that can take me around. 

Because I don’t know what I’m doing. 

I don’t speak Italian. I’m gonna take some classes and I speak a little bit of French, but, I’ve just never been there.

And I wanna have people that I can connect with and do all that. 

And I was also invited to speak at a conference in Oakland and I wanna reach out and check if I know anybody in Oakland that wants to come to this event and come support me, or take some footage and give them free access to the event. 

And maybe be able to have dinner or lunch with a person. 

You know what I mean? 

Well, that one part when I build that community, then I’ll have people to talk to. 

But not only that, when you’re building a digital community, what ends up happening is that when people are talking and then you’ve made a video or whatever and people are talking in the chat now.

They’re all talking to each other and now they’re all supporting each other. 

Or we can come on live streams together. 

For example, my favorite online right now is Antonio. 

I talk about Antonio all the time. He just turned 19 years old and he came on my live one day, and was just like, “today’s my birthday”

And I was like, “Everybody. Say Happy Birthday Antonio” 

And he got all these people saying Happy birthday. 

And then the next day he came on and I told the next group that day, “Hey, Antonio’s birthday was yesterday” 

And it was just kind of the support of the community for his birthday.

And I don’t know how he felt, but for me it felt good to just remember him when he comes on and to be able to ask my community to say happy birthday. 

Or just starting to understand something like learning about some of my friends, their kids, or like my online people’s kids or whatever.

It’s just when you build these online communities. One, you don’t feel as alone. 

So one of my favorite people online right now is Emily D. Baker. 

She has this law community. 

She covers all these big cases, like celebrity type cases. 

Right now, she’s covering the Alex Murdaugh murder trial and she has this whole community.

And every time I’m there with her. They’re having all these conversations and saying all these things. 

And it’s so fascinating to just watch them, like they have their own language, have an emoji, and they know what that emoji means to them. 

It’s just something special about having that community.

But also one of the special things about having that type of community is they refer other people to the community. 

With her, it’s called Law Nerds. 

And so if they’re in conversations with people at a bar and Emily is nowhere in their sight because she doesn’t live there. And they’re talking about this murder trial that she’s covering on YouTube, her people may start talking about law nerds and whatever.

And then someone else may go, “what is that?” 

And then now she connects them and then it brings other people into this community in a way that advertisement couldn’t. 

I’m not against paying for ads and all that type of stuff but it’s when you have a community, the community just does something different.

It’s just something else that happens with that. 

Like we all follow these people online who we just saw or we hear about them. 

And we love them and we support them, but it’s only because they started so. And they kept doing a thing and then they kept connecting with the people that were coming to them. 

Does that make sense? 

And so having these online communities like help on what it is that you’re doing. It just feel less lonely. 

We are in the process of really learning how to do this even better for my community, but it helps me feel less lonely. 

It helps my team feel less lonely. 

And then it helps those that are a part of the community feel less lonely. But it’s looking like a family.

It becomes a thing. It’s like you’re not by yourself. 

Like there’s these conferences that happen in general that may not have anything to do with Emily D. Baker, her law nerds, but she could be talking about Bravo Con she went to, and she could say, “I’m gonna be a bravo con. Is anybody gonna be a bravo con?” 

And she may find out that 50 people in her community are gonna be a bravo con. 

She can say, “oh, I’m gonna get space at the hotel, let’s have a meetup” 

And now everybody can meet up at this conference. 

And so it’s like these really big opportunities, not just to make money, but to just build a community that supports you. 

If you’re listening to me, you’re probably thinking of some of the communities that you’re connected to or you’ve heard about or you’ve seen and you can see how having a community can be such a big blessing to your personal life as well as to your business.

And so if you have not intentionally started building a local community of people that are doing what you’re doing, they may not be doing exactly what you’re doing, but they’re in business, then I would encourage you to do so. 

It’s a process.

It’s scary and it’s scary for me to be texting people, connecting with them.

But I don’t wanna be sitting at home every day white with my cats. 

I just don’t wanna be doing that. 

And I don’t wanna build this business alone. 

I wanna have people like the big communities that I have connected with where I can support and they can support each other. 

It’s like a whole thing.

So I just wanna talk about this to encourage you, because community is just so life-giving. 

Especially in a world in a time where everybody is on their phones and so disconnected when you have these moments of being connected.

It just feels like something we all have never experienced.

EP: 199 Why you need community to grow your business

 If you’re gonna have success as a business owner, you need to have some type of community.  Now I’m gonna talk about two different types of community in this

If you’re not growing on social media, there’s a reason why. 

And in this article, I wanna talk to you about the five reasons you’re probably not growing on social media, but what you should be doing differently. 

One of the things to know about social media is that we all want to be able to grow a following no matter what channel you’re on, whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, wherever. 

We all want to grow a following, but a lot of times we fail to really realize that people don’t follow us because we want them to follow us. 

They follow us because there is something they’re getting from us and they want to see more of it. 

And so I wanna give you the five reasons why if you’re not growing on social media, why it’s not happening.

The first reason why is because you’re probably not showing up consistently. 

I know that a lot of times we are like, “well, I got busy, or this happened” 

And listen, the truth is all of that probably is happening and did happen. But it is the reason why you’re not growing because I need you to understand the habit of a person.

Let’s just say you wanna go to your favorite restaurant, whether it’s fast food or whatever, and you never know when they’re gonna be open. 

You’re just like, “I thought their hours were this to this. This one they were open this time, and the next time they were closed on Thursdays”

People don’t like inconsistency. 

It’s like the only restaurant that we know is closed on a certain day is Chick-fil-A because they’re closed on Sundays. 

But we know that there are hours Monday through Saturday when they are open. 

And so the same thing goes for you and for your social media accounts, people wanna know that you’re gonna be there regularly.

Doesn’t mean every single day. Regularly could mean every single week. 

There are people that are on YouTube who only post once a week. 

That’s like my YouTube channel. We post twice a week and that’s it. 

We’re not gonna be here every single day posting a new video, but we will be there every Monday and Thursday.

And so if you’re wanting to grow, whether it’s your YouTube channel or TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, wherever, you’re gonna have to start being very consistent. 

And so it’s important for you to choose what is going to be your posting cadence. 

And that choice is literally up to you. 

If you already know that you’re already busy all the time, then bank on posting once a week.

 And what you could do with that to make sure that you’re consistent is you can do what I call batch recording. 

It is where you would normally record one video per day or whatever.

You could sit down in a day and record your four videos for YouTube or whatever channel you’re gonna use, and then you schedule it. 

And then that way, those four things are done for the entire month. 

And then in two weeks, again, you can record another four videos that are gonna help you to be consistent and it’s gonna help people to trust your channel, or whatever platform, and knowing that your content is gonna be there every single day.

The second reason you’re probably not growing is because you’re not talking directly to your audience. 

Now, I know a lot of times we say I’m putting content out there for everybody, but the truth is we’re not putting content out there for everybody. 

So let’s just say your channel talks about cats. 

It’s amazing but people who don’t like cats are not gonna watch your videos. 

And so if you’re a person that talks about cats, then you need to focus on having your content talk directly to cat lovers or cat sitters, or vets or whomever. 

So for me, on my channel, I talk about business and marketing.

A person that wants celebrity gossip is not going to be interested in this particular channel because they’re not gonna get any of that from it. 

So my job is to talk directly to you who is watching about what it is that you wanna see and what you wanna experience. 

That way you will follow my channel.

And so the same thing goes with Instagram. A lot of times we think that, “oh, if I post this funny reel or if I post this great image that everybody will follow me” 

NO.

When people choose to follow you, subscribe or whatever, it’s telling them that, “Hey, I like this person’s content. And I want to see more of this person’s content”

So you really have to understand the concept of a follow. 

People follow or subscribe because they’re saying, I wanna see this on a regular basis, right?

That’s why we pay for subscriptions or we start a series on Netflix because we wanna see this thing all the way through. 

So if you’re gonna grow on social media, you have to make sure that you are spending time talking directly to your audience in all of your videos.

The third reason you may not be growing on social media is because you don’t appear confident in your videos. 

I’m not saying that you gotta act like you are Beyonce or whomever in your videos, but you do want to be someone that people like to watch.  

That doesn’t mean what you look like. Are you pretty or not pretty? Are you skinny or not skinny? 

It just means that you want to appear confident in your videos, whatever it is you’re doing, whatever it is you are talking about. Because you are being the subject matter expert or whatever. 

It’s like you could have a vlog channel where you’re talking about yourself and your life as you are vlogging. 

Well, you wanna be confident about you, confident about your life.

It doesn’t mean that you are perfect, your life is perfect, or like all circumstances are always perfect. 

It does mean that you’re just confident being there on camera. 

Because the worst thing that we all can experience is watching somebody on camera who’s fidgeting. 

You can just tell that they’re not really confident being there.

They’re just really uncomfortable to watch. 

It’s like how uncomfortable would you feel if you’re constantly seeing me adjusting myself and I’m like making sure that everything is okay and I’m looking off to the side and it makes you feel very uncomfortable, right?

So you have to make sure that you are and appear confident on camera.

The fourth reason why you may not be growing on social media is because you’re not providing value. 

Listen, when a person chooses to rather watch a short piece of content or a long piece of content, there should be something that they’re getting from watching you. 

So we watched the movie Wednesday on Netflix, the series because we were being entertained. 

So many people, not me, watched Dahmer on Netflix because they were being entertained by the craziness of what happened with Jeffrey Dahmer. 

Right now, people are watching on YouTube and on TV, the Alex Myrtle trial to see if he’s gonna be found guilty or innocent of murder. Because there’s an entertainment thing that is happening with people. 

And so let’s just say that you are a business owner and you’re teaching people about a thing very similar to me. 

People have to be receiving some type of value to make them want to watch the content and subscribe or follow. 

Now, I keep saying this, but I’m just trying to drill it down in your head so you can fully understand why people are making a decision to follow.

And so if you’re watching some people’s accounts grow like crazy and yours is not growing, it is because of what you’re saying or what you’re putting out there. 

People are not finding the value with it. 

And it doesn’t mean that your content isn’t valuable. 

But you’ve gotta find a way to articulate it in a way where it’s valuable and where people say, “oh, I enjoyed this and I wanna see more of it”

Think about some of those channels you follow. 

They have this feel good content where they’re going out and they’re helping someone, like a homeless person or they’re giving money to someone, or they raised money for a cause and you’re constantly seeing that on your feed that is easy to follow.

Or there’s this channel on Instagram. I just started following a guy who does voice overs of animals doing crazy things, and he’s saying this crazy stuff as he’s doing voice overs. 

It’s so funny. 

And it provides this comedic relief. 

You never really see the guy. You just love the experience of it all because it’s providing value.

So you wanna make sure that if you wanna grow on any social platform that you’re providing value.

And then lastly, the number one reason why you’re not growing on social media is because you’re not creating shareable content. 

 

So what does that mean by shareable content? 

So shareable content is basically where you have provided value in your video in some type of way that makes people wanna share it. 

Think about this, when was the last time you grabbed a link on social media and you posted it on other social medias or you shared it with friends in their inbox or through a text message?

That is shareable content. 

If you are a content creator in terms of like a business teacher, then how can you create content that teaches a personal thing that makes them aave it for themselves and share it with somebody else. 

So for example, you’ll see people on Instagram that have these things called carousels, where you look at their feed and there’s an image where you can see that there’s like multiple images that go along with that image.

And if you keep swiping, each slide is providing value, right? 

So that is shareable content. 

That’s the stuff that people wanna share with their friends, but they also wanna share in Instagram stories, Facebook stories, or other different places, so that way other people can get value from it.

Because here’s what happens with shareable content. 

So let’s just say that you did a carousel on Instagram. And then you shared it to your Instagram story. You’ll see whomever shared it, right?

Let’s just say I see your carousel and I have 20,000 followers on Instagram, and then I share it with my stories. 

And if I have a thousand people watching my stories every day, and all of them see that.  

That’s an opportunity for that piece of content of yours to reach a thousand people who then learn that you exist and then they can come and follow your account.

Does that make sense? 

I see people all the time who take a piece of my content, share it to their Instagram stories, and I’ll see maybe a hundred people that come and follow me on Instagram because of that content that I put out. 

Somebody shared it with their audience and then they came back to me.

So that is how you can grow on social media and with the last one being shareable content.

5 reasons you are not growing on Social Media

If you’re not growing on social media, there’s a reason why.  And in this article, I wanna talk to you about the five reasons you’re probably not growing on

Have you ever met a Christian? 

And all they talk about is God. All they talk about is heaven. All they talk about is the Bible. 

And as you’re with them, you’re like, “Am I even saved? Am I doing life wrong if I’m not always talking about God? Always quoting scriptures” 

And here’s what I realize. 

We’re not supposed to be so heavenly minded that we are not earthly good, meaning that we love God and God wants us to make disciples and all the things, but we are still here. 

And so today we’re talking about not being so heavenly minded that we are not earthly good. 

And I know we may rubble a few feathers with that, but let’s just have a little conversation about that. 

It’s important to not be so heavenly minded that we are no earthly good, right? 

And so what does that mean to me? 

So I started the article off by asking the question of, have you ever encountered a person who all they talk about is God?

All they talk about is heaven, and they never talk about food or basketball or jewelry or other things. 

It’s like every single thing they talk about is getting to heaven and getting to heaven. 

Sometimes it makes you feel you’re not saved. It makes you feel you’re not doing enough, and honestly, it feels a little awkward.

It’s hard to have a conversation with a person who can only talk about one thing. 

But not only that,  if you’re somebody and you’re not a Christian or you’re not whatever place that a person is in with their Christianity. And then you encounter this person who can’t have a conversation out of heaven, a conversation out of the Bible, then you can’t relate to them.

And you definitely don’t wanna continue talking to them. 

You definitely don’t wanna come to their church. 

You definitely don’t wanna be discipled by them. Because you’re like, “if I’m supposed to be like you, then I don’t want that because it is, it feels a little weird” 

I know you have experienced that type of person, right?

Or it may not be Christianity, it may be politics, it may be the Cold War or whatever. 

And all they can talk about is that thing and you’re just like, “Okay”

And so when I encounter people like that, I don’t always give my opinion because I give my opinion if somebody asks for it. 

Or if they’re just continuing on and on then I’m like, “Hey, you’re doing too much” 

I find a way to articulate what I’m thinking to them. 

When I think about people that don’t really know how to navigate that. 

I feel like it’s a couple things.

One, sometimes a person is a brand new Christian. 

They were all the way over here in what it is they were in and what they were doing. 

And then when they gave that up, they gave it up for God. And in a sense, that’s all they have. 

That’s all they know, because that’s all they’ve been doing.

Giving up all of that stuff over there because there’s this part of them that’s like, “I can’t do anything of what I used to do, or it’s gonna bring me all the way back over here” 

Because when you’ve been quite “lost and you are found”, you’re like, I just wanna stay in this safe place.

I get it. 

And so I can see it for a new Christian. 

But someone who is not brand new to Jesus, and you’ve been around for a while, you gotta learn how not to be like that.

I really don’t think that when Jesus was sitting with the tax collectors, and when He was with a woman who was about to get stoned, I really don’t think that He was quoting things right.

If we read the scriptures, He was not like that.

He acted like a human and He made people feel normal. 

He drew people to Him and then drew them to God. 

But He wasn’t this weirdo. 

No. 

It sounds really mean. But I like to try to help people to understand that concept of like, you have to think about the person that you’re talking to.

What experience are they having? 

Now, I know some people say, “well, I’m not gonna be like them because I’m with Jesus” or whatever. 

I’m not saying go be like them. 

I’m not saying go do things that you should not do or have conversations around things that you don’t wanna have conversations around.

What I am saying is that one of the greatest things we can do is love people, and then the next thing is to discipline them. 

But you can’t love a person if you don’t get to know a person. 

If you don’t spend time with a person you don’t. Start enjoying some of the things that they enjoyed. 

Not bad things, but just normal things. 

You can’t learn to appreciate a person or be with a person if you are weird. 

You know what I’m saying? 

It’s kind of like I’ve got friends who love reality TV. I don’t really watch a lot of shows like Real Housewives and stuff like that. But I did watch Love Is Blind.

I think back in the day I wanted Married at First Sight and there’s a friend of mine who loves that type of stuff. 

I don’t talk about some of the things that are on the show or act like that but it’s funny sometimes when I’m watching it. 

And I have a friend of mine who I just reached out to and we’re able to chat about it.

But this also is the same friend to where if something is going down and she needs prayer, I’m the one that she comes to. 

There’s other friends that have really gotten into what they call biohacking, like learning all the ins and outs of their bodies and organs. All that helps with health and wellness.

I don’t really understand a lot of the stuff. But I do understand some of it. 

And it has been very beneficial for me to learn it. 

And when I’m having a conversation with this group of friends, we can have full conversations about it.

You know what I mean? 

Like I was at somebody’s house and they were talking for an hour and a half about this stuff I did not understand. 

I just sat there just listening. 

And they said, “Keenya, do you understand any of this?” 

And I’m like, “no, I don’t understand any of it, but it’s okay because I’m learning by listening to ya’ll” 

And then somebody changed the subject to something else and I was 100% in that.

And I was able to kind of walk this girl through some anxiety she was experiencing. 

And when I was finished talking, they were like, “how did you do that?” 

And I’m like, “how did I do what?” 

They’re like, “how did you do what you just did?” 

I said, “oh, so while y’all were biohacking people, I’m this person”

And then they spent the next hours just asking me questions. 

Then they were like, “well, what is your relationship with God like? How do you hear God?” 

And then it became this whole long conversation about me and my relationship with God, my experiences with God and all that, because I was able to just be normal.

We don’t have to agree with people. 

We don’t have to be in all the things that they’re doing, but we can’t be so weird. 

We can’t be so focused on heaven and getting to heaven that we’re actually not enjoying the life that God gave us. 

God gave me these amazing little cats, and if I was so focused on heaven, I would spend all of my days just praying and praying in my house, and not enjoying the cute little cats that I have.

Not really enjoying learning fashion and makeup. 

Not really enjoying living in this beautiful paradise, San Diego, California, if I was so focused on heaven. 

So this is a very short article, and I wanted to bring this to you because I know that we love Jesus, but Jesus wants us to love people. And lead people to Him.

But you can’t love people if you don’t get to know people. 

You don’t love your spouse, your kids, or whatever, without getting to know them. 

You don’t force them into whatever. 

That’s not love. 

That’s control, right? 

But you do spend time with them. You let people spend time with you so you can get to know them and love them.

And so you gotta go and spend time with other people.

How to be earthly good

Have you ever met a Christian? And all they talk about is God. All they talk about is heaven. All they talk about is the Bible. And as you’re

If you’re gonna count down to eight, that may have felt long, but that’s really short. 

And what does that mean? 

That means if the data says you only got eight seconds to capture someone’s attention, then that means these 15, 20-minute, 30-minute live streams, we’re gonna have to start cutting those things down.

Even if you are reading this article, what’s happening in your brain is you want to do other things. 

You want to multitask. 

You may be listening to the podcast while driving and so you can’t do much. 

You’re like, “I’m gonna listen and I’m gonna drive this car”.

But you may be at home or at work multitasking. 

You may be watching or listening from your computer or multitasking on your phone. 

You’re doing it while you’re eating. 

There’s so much stuff you’re probably doing and that’s the same thing with everybody else.

And so it’s really important for us to understand what is happening right now. 

What the data is saying. 

And so because the data is saying that you’ve only got a short window of time to capture someone’s attention before they move on to something else, that means the future of video marketing is Short.Video marketing is here to stay, but it is definitely evolving over time. 

It is not like when we first started using live streaming on Periscope and then Facebook Live and Instagram. 

You definitely have to learn how to not only keep people’s attention, whether it’s long-form but also how to use the short-form.

And so this is where marketing is going. 

We are talking about the future of video marketing and where it is today and where it is going. 

Why it is still what needs to be done in order to have success in building your business online.

At this point, you know I have been live streaming pretty much since 2016 or 2017 when Periscope came out and I used to do what is called the Keenya Kelly Morning Show every single morning. 

That’s when I first became a full-time entrepreneur for the second time, and I realized that if I was going to build an audience and let people know who I was and what it is that I had to offer, then I had to show up in a way that was free, but also that I can reach a captive audience.

And so I was Live every morning on Periscope, and then Facebook Live came out, and then eventually Instagram Live came out. 

Now you’ve got Twitter Live, you’ve got LinkedIn Live, YouTube Live, TikTok Live, and all the different places where you’re able to live stream. 

And so what I can say about Livestream is that it’s still not going anywhere.

It’s not going anywhere. 

However, I’ve talked about this before, that we have to think about what is happening with people.

And recent data says that the average person’s attention span is 8 to 11 seconds. Like, “think about that, 8 to 11 seconds”. 

The future of video marketing is short. 

Now, I’m not just saying that as a biased person who teaches TikTok, but I am saying, let’s look at the data. 

If you look at what Facebook looked like in 2020, what Instagram looked like, what YouTube looked like, what Pinterest looked like, and what they all look like in 2023, they look nothing like they used to. 

They’re so much short-form content that has happened to all these different platforms.

And this isn’t just so they can compete with TikTok. 

This is because the attention span of a person is short. 

And we have to keep people’s attention. 

So what am I saying? 

What I’m saying is that the future of video marketing is that you’re gonna have to learn.

I’ve said this back in 2020 when God told me to get on TikTok.

I said it in 2021, I said it in 2022, and I’m saying it now in 2023, that if you are going to build your business and can stay relevant and stay in front of your audience and stay marketing. 

You’re gonna have to learn how to use short-form video to capture your audience’s attention. 

Now, this doesn’t mean that what you used to do a full 30-minute live, or 10 minutes or whatever, you’ve gotta cut it down to 30 seconds.

No.

What this means is that if we are normally doing 10-minute long videos or whatever and we’re talking about a lot of different things in 10 minutes. 

Just think about it, how much do you talk about in 10 minutes? 

You need to take little bite-size pieces of what you normally would do in a 10-minute video and turn it into 30 seconds.

Does that mean you’re gonna be amazing at it when you first start? 

No. 

You’re actually gonna be terrible or what I would say is “terrible”, which is terrible in French. 

So what I’m saying is that if you’re gonna have success this year and beyond with capturing your audience’s attention, you’re gonna have to learn the art of short-form video marketing.

And here’s what I also can tell you. 

You’re gonna love it. 

You’re gonna freaking love it. 

You’re gonna love that you can record 10 videos, ten, 30-second videos, and five minutes or 10 minutes or whatever. 

You’re gonna love that you can do that and that you’ve now got 10 pieces of content for 10 days versus having to be live for 10 days. 

You’re gonna be like, why didn’t I do this sooner? 

When you realize just how effective these short-form videos are.

It’s like I posted a video yesterday on YouTube shorts. I went to it today and it has like 1400 views on it. 

Another video I posted last week on YouTube shorts has 2,400 views on it.

I posted a video on TikTok and it has like 300,000 views on it.

These little short pieces of content.

But when I go back to my live streams, 200, and 300 taps on the live videos and on the long videos.

I still do my long ones because people still wanna search and read and watch and all this other stuff or whatever.

But I can capture people’s attention with these short pieces of content. 

Like personally, I’m watching my YouTube channel grow.

It’s because of the short content, people are coming in contact with me and they’re able to watch me get a glimpse of who I am, and what it is that I do through short-form video. 

So the future is short. 

It’s still a video, but it is short. 

Now, what does that mean by a short video?

You’re still gonna have to do a good job with your video.

Don’t get me wrong, you’re not gonna be able to do these bootleg videos where there’s no lighting, there are no captions on screen, NO. 

You still gonna have to do good things with video. 

So let me explain what it looks like with a good video.

First of all, it looks like you look good.

You’ve thought about this, you don’t have like a booger in your nose or whatever. 

I recorded a video previously and we’re putting it up on a website. 

It was on the website and everything for like an hour. 

And I went to the video and was like, “is that a booger in my nose?” 

And I said, take it down. 

And I reshot that video so fast cause…

Clearly anyway. 

So it looks like you look good in your video.

You’ve thought about it, you’re glad to be there.

Two, your lighting is good, whether you have a ring light, an external light, or you have good lighting outside. 

Second of all, you have a great topic. 

Whatever it is you’re talking about, it’s great on a relevant topic for your audience. 

Next thing is it is short and to the point.

So for example, Let’s just say that I was gonna do a video about the future of video marketing.

I have to think about this video from the beginning, the middle, and the end. 

When I teach this, I’m always teaching my clients that when you’re creating short-form video, one of the arts of short-form video is creating what I call “Scroll-Stopping content”. 

Scroll- Stopping content, because people are scrolling on social and your content stops them from scrolling, scrolling, stopping content. 

And so how do you do that? 

Well, one, how the video looks in general.

Two, it’s your opening and we call that the hook. 

What are you saying in your words and the texts on the screen within the first seconds?

Not three seconds within the first second. 

Because that is what’s gonna stop people from scrolling. 

That means you have to think about it. 

You have to plan this. 

It doesn’t mean it has to be fully scripted, but it does mean that you plan this. 

And so in the beginning you have your opening hook and then you deliver based on whatever that hook is.

You keep them there and then you can make a call to action at the end. 

Your call to action could be, “be sure to like this video and subscribe”. 

It could be, “comment below”. 

It could be “follow me”. 

It could be “grab our free training in my bio”. 

It could be whatever your call to action is, but the inning is you’re wrapping it up and you’re giving it a call to action.

It’s just short and to the point. 

It’s like when I think about short-form videos, I think about Super Bowl Sunday. 

Like the moment that ad comes up on the screen, they got a second. 

Or you are gonna leave and go get some food, or you’re gonna go get a drink or you’re gonna go to the bathroom.

But if something that you’re doing in that first second is capturing them, they ain’t going nowhere. 

That’s the same with short-form videos, the same as it pertains to scroll-stopping content. 

So if you are going to be able to have success on video this year and beyond, you’re gonna have to master the art of short-form video.

EP: 198 The future of video marketing

If you’re gonna count down to eight, that may have felt long, but that’s really short.  And what does that mean?  That means if the data says you only

You’re not growing an email list, just a following online? 

No, that’s not what you wanna do. 

Today, I wanna talk to you about three reasons why you need to grow an email list. 

Now listen, I know that you are building a business online. 

I know you’ve got this amazing following on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and wherever people are watching you.

But today I really wanna talk to you about the value of having an email list and the three things that you need in order to have a successful email list or to get people onto your email list. 

So first, let’s talk about why you even need an email list. 

So Mark Zuckerberg, we know he owns Facebook and Instagram.

He owns it, right? 

So at any point in time, Mark could make some changes. 

Mark could choose to sell a thing. 

Mark could choose to say, “you can’t reach your audience anymore without an ad” 

He could do whatever he wants to do because he owns Facebook and Instagram.

ByteDance owns TikTok. 

They can make a decision at any point in time on how they want to run their platforms.

And you own your business. And so you need to make sure that you are the one that is 100% in control of your business at any given time. 

As a business owner, I’m a business coach where I teach business owners how to make money online, and specifically we focus on short form video and TikTok.

My job is to make sure that at any point in time if I want to talk to my current customers or potential customers, that I have the opportunity to do so. 

And as it pertains to social media, while I love it, I have no control over social media because I don’t own it. 

It’s not my platform.

The only way that I own something is if I have control.

 And so building an email list is how you are going to have control over being able to contact your people. 

Now, I’m not talking about control in the negative sense of making people do things or manipulating them. 

No. I am specifically talking about the ability to do a thing.

So for example, you have control at your house. You know that if you buy food and you put it in the refrigerator that nobody can tell you that you can’t have food because you bought the food. It’s your place. 

Same thing goes for marketing. 

So that is why you need to be building an email list. Because here’s what happens. 

So I currently have about 490,000 followers on TikTok, and I love my people. 

I love my community. But guess what? If I go live, I’m not guaranteed that 490,000 people are gonna get an alert to come watch me live. 

I am not guaranteed that if I post a video on TikTok, that 490,000 people are gonna get an alert that Keenya Kelly just posted a new video.

But if I have 490,000 people on my email list and if I send one email, 490,000 people are going to receive an alert and that is having control. 

That is having control over my business. 

And so the thing is that you’ve gotta figure out how you can get people off of whatever social platform that they’re on onto your email list.

And so today I actually wanna give you those tips on how you’re gonna be able to do that. 

So the first thing you need to make sure is that you have your audience. So this is not number one, but you have to make sure that you know your audience and you know what they need. 

For example, because I teach digital marketing to business owners. I know that my audience is having lots of different struggles as it pertains to marketing.

Now, specifically with short form video and TikTok marketing, I know that 99% of my audience is trying to figure out how in the world I create content on TikTok. 

How do I know this? Because I ask them. 

On a regular basis, I’m in my, on my email list, I’m on my Facebook groups, I’m everywhere trying to find out what is the problem people are having.

And when I speak live, I’m always asking the room, “what are you guys struggling with?”

So because I know that, I’m going, “Okay, here is my audience, I’ve identified my niche and my people. Here is what my audience is struggling with.” 

So then it is my job to determine what solution am I going to provide to my audience that will help them with their issue, and that will bring them onto my email list.

Because it’s really important to know this, even though you wanna get people off of social media onto your email list, that they’re not just gonna join your email list because you want them to. 

People are going to join your email list because you are giving them something. 

There’s something that you are giving them that is causing them to want to join your email list. 

And typically what it is you give them are a free PDF or a free training of something that’s like in exchange.  

So for example, I like Sephora. I shop at Sephora for makeup, and Sephora wants my email address.

Why? Because Sephora wants to have control. 

They wanna be able to contact me at any given time. 

And so when I go to their website, they say, “give us your email address and we’ll give you X percentage off to your next order” 

And I’m like, “percentage off my next order? the order game on”

So they can control and then I get the discount. 

So as it pertains to you and your business, you’ve gotta find out what would motivate your people to give you their email addresses. 

So for us we have what’s called our 10 TikTok templates. So you literally can go to www.keenyakelly.com/tiktoktemplates

And here’s the deal. When you go and download this, it’s gonna give you our top 10 videos on TikTok that you can use to create content around your business. 

So, It’s gonna give you a PDF guide that is beautifully designed.

It’s gonna give you a link to the video and it’s gonna give you a tutorial on what to do in order to have success on TikTok.

With these particular videos, all of our people that download these are like, “this is great, this is easy. I can do this” 

And so they get what they get, which is a tutorial on creating for TikTok. And then we are able to get them as a new person that has joined our email list. 

So we found out what they needed, we created it, and then we offered it to people.

So you have to make sure that you have an offer and you can’t just make up a random offer.

You have to create an offer that your audience actually needs. 

Now, I’m not saying this needs to be an expensive offer. I wouldn’t go and give people an hour of my time to join my email list because I just don’t do that.

I have a price for if somebody wants to work with me one-on-one. So I don’t do that. 

And some people do a 15 minute discovery call. I don’t recommend that because that’s still your time. And you could end up with like a thousand people booking discovery calls with you and you don’t actually get paid for anything.

And so, I just don’t recommend that. 

So you wanna determine what it is that you can offer to your audience that it will serve them.

It’ll be great for them. They will love it. They will stay on your email list, and then you get them on your email list. So that’s number one, your offer.

The second thing you need to have in order to build an email list is you have to have a way to actually capture the leads.

So remember, our goal is to get them onto our email list. 

And so what we have decided to do is, let’s just say it’s our templates.

We’re gonna give our 10 TikTok templates as our offer. 

So here’s what has to happen. You need a couple different things. 

First of all, you’re gonna need a webpage. This is a thing people are gonna go to with the link in order to be able to grab your offer.

And so when they go to the webpage there, there’s gonna be a form that is on that page. 

And when they fill out that form to get the offer, what happens is this webpage should have a way for a person to be able to receive the offer.

So the webpage has to have a form. And then this is what’s gonna cause the trigger to happen.

We use a system which is called Kartra. The templates are saved on the inside of Kartra, and all of this is connected. 

So when someone goes to this webpage, they enter the information into the form. This form then triggers Kartra to give the templates to that person. 

So you have to have the webpage with the form, with the software that is gonna house your offer that you’re gonna deliver.

And for us, it’s our templates. 

And then guess what happens? We get our goal with people joining our email list. 

And make it very simple. You should’ve your email software system, or delivery tool. And then you have to have the actual product that you’re gonna give to them. 

Now, if you don’t know how to do this, then my recommendation is that you can hire someone.

 

 You can literally outsource this. You can go to a website like upwork.com. And you can hire someone to create this for you because I don’t know how to create this.

And instead of me trying to figure out all those things, I just found the person to do this for me so that I could focus on reaching my audience and giving them the opportunity to grab our templates or whatever our thing is. 

So you have to make sure that you have a way to deliver the particular offer that you are gonna offer to your audience.

And then the last thing that you need is you need a marketing strategy because here’s the deal. Just because you build it doesn’t mean that they’re gonna come.

I know we all have seen the movies and heard the quotes. If you build it, they will come. 

Listen, that’s not actually how it goes.

You gotta build it and then you’ve gotta market that thing. 

You gotta constantly give people the opportunity of knowing that it exists. 

It’s not enough for it to be in your bio on Instagram or on TikTok. You are gonna have to constantly market that offer, letting people know what it is that you have to offer so that they can purchase it.

I’m not telling you that you have to do all of this stuff, but there are so many ways to market. 

So first of all, you know, I love TikTok, and so I’m always telling people that it’s important for you to start using organic marketing. 

Paid marketing is great, but it’s also very expensive, and so if you’re gonna go the paid route, Also have the organic route.

That way both of them are giving you what you want. 

You can use a long form YouTube Video, YouTube shorts, TikTok, Instagram, Instagram reels. Facebook, Facebook reels, Pinterest, or podcasts. 

You can also use speaking at events, live events, virtual events. You can do networking.

There are so many ways to drive people to your opt in. 

I love running ads and organic marketing.  

And if I ever speak at an event, if it’s live, I like to have a QR code where people are able to go and download that thing that I had there.

If it’s virtual, I like to have a QR code there as well, but I like to be able to say it at the end.

Especially if I offer to speak at somebody’s event for free, then in that regard, I’m making sure that I am able to make that offer for that thing, otherwise I’m just speaking for free and not really getting any benefit from it.

So, just a little tip, if you’re speaking for free, you make sure you’re getting something out of it. 

Don’t just let people say you’re gonna get exposure. 

That’s another conversation for another day. You can get your own exposure. You can get your own exposure with short video, long video, all the things, but I digress.

So you need to have a strategic marketing strategy in order to get people to come into your email list. 

Listen, this is gonna make you so much money. This is gonna help save you a lot of headache. 

You know, every time we launch my course, I have a mastermind course called Monetize the Tok, where we work with business owners for two and a half months. 

And 99% of the time when we market this product that 85% of the people that purchased this are coming from our email list.

The last time we made a hundred thousand dollars when we launched this. 

And we were tracking and we saw what we made over $85,000 from email. 

Why is that? Because we focus so heavily on getting people onto our email list all throughout the year so that when it’s time to market this, we’re just marketing to the people that are already in our community that we’re not having to spend so much money on paid ads because we’ve already done that with our free tools so that now the community is here.

We’re nurturing them, talking to them, serving them, and then when we make the offer, they’re already there and it doesn’t cost us a ton of money to be able to do so.

3 Things you need to Grow Your Email List

You’re not growing an email list, just a following online?  No, that’s not what you wanna do.  Today, I wanna talk to you about three reasons why you need

I’m pretty sure when I say this I’m gonna get a bunch of flack. 

But one of the good things about this is that like, it’s not like a million people are reading this article but I said, “since this is my blog, I wanna talk about it”. 

When I thought about this topic I felt like I had been thinking about this for a really, really long time.

And I think that because of what’s happening in Kentucky at Ashburg College and with everybody talking about the move of God that is happening there.

It just kind of moved me. 

And I said, “well, let’s talk about it”. 

So we’re talking about whether we need another revival. 

Let me explain why I chose that topic or that phrase. 

I have been a Christian pretty much my whole life, and I think that I didn’t really start hearing people talk about the word revival until I left the black church.

First of all, what do you mean by I left the black church

For most of my life, I attended predominantly black churches,  

Just all black.

 And then a few years back, God asked me to go to this other church and when I started going to this other church, it was more multiracial and I was like, “okay, this is awesome”.

And I got filled with the Holy Spirit at the other church and they started really operating in the gifts and learning about all the things on the inside of me and just experiencing the Holy Spirit and all this stuff.

I think what started to happen was I started running in different circles where people were talking about God and the moves of God, like God moving on just like an outpouring. 

It’s kind of like, it’s one thing to sprinkle rain.

Rain is sprinkling a little bit here, a little bit there.

But then if something happens, it’s just like a downpour and it’s just a downpour for days, weeks, months, and it never stops. 

One of the things that I started to experience when I started going to more multiracial churches, is people started talking about the moves of God, the outpourings of God.

Where it’s like, “you may experience this in a service one time, or this over here a couple of months ago, or when a special conference is happening or whatever, versus just like this massive thing that is happening and it just continues to happen and it’s not stopping”.

And so when I started running in the more multicultural circles, I started hearing about the word revival and then I started hearing about something called the Jesus People Movement. 

I started hearing about Toronto Outpouring or what happened in Toronto, Canada at one point like this big God just manifested Himself in a way that was so powerful that so many people got radically changed, and when they went back to wherever they came from, that people, “it’s kind of played it”. 

Let me give a movie example to explain more. 

Let’s just say you got the glow. You just have the thing and it’s on you, and at first, you didn’t have it and then God touches you and now you got this thing and everywhere you go it’s touching everybody. 

It’s like changing everybody into this thing.

So that’s kind of how I would try to explain it. 

That kind of was what happened with the Toronto Outpouring and some of the others.

Since I’ve been in these circles and once I started going to ministry school, five, or six years ago, I kept hearing everybody talk about praying for revival. 

“We’re praying for revival and the revival’s coming. Revival’s here, the revival’s here!” 

And I’m just like, “What are they talking about Revivals?”

I’m just gonna tell you what I get on Google when I type the word revival.

Google results:

“Sanford students unite and unscripted revival.” 

“Kentucky Asbury University ‘revival’ going viral on TikTok.”

Let’s see if there’s anything else. 

What is the biblical meaning of the word revival? 

Google result – “The word revival literally means renewal or awakening. It is impossible to restore something that never existed.”

What is an example of revival? 

Google result – “We usually use it to mean “returned to glory, importance, or strengths” Fresh paint and new flowerbeds might mean your neighborhood is experiencing a revival.”

How does spiritual revival happen?

Google result – “Revival happens when God’s people are prepared. It happens when we are ready for it with tender hearts and humble spirits. We can’t orchestrate widespread far-reaching revivals, that’s God’s work. Revival often begins with people coming under deep conviction and crying out in confession and repentance for their sins.” 

So now let’s talk about that.

When we are reading the word revival, it’s when God just starts to pour Himself out in a way that it just can’t be contained or whatever.

I’ve been in a lot of circles where you have people of all races, and all ages, believing in declaring for revival. 

Revival, revival, revival!

If I gotta be honest, I’m so annoyed. 

The word revival bothers me so much and it doesn’t bother me in terms of the Bible.

It bothers me in terms of how we are, with it and using it as Christians.

I’m not saying it’s all of us or whatever. 

I’m just being honest, this is my blog!

One of the things that I am experiencing is not everybody, by any means, but one of the things that I’m experiencing is we are…

Okay. I pulled out a pen and try to give some examples. 

Here is us. And I’m holding a black pen on the left-hand side.

And this is us. This is us here on earth. 

We have our jobs, we have our businesses, we have our lives, and we’re doing whatever we’re doing every single day. 

Here is us in white pen, us with Jesus, us with a church, when we’re at our prayer services.

And in the pink one, this is everybody else that is not Christian or whatever.

One of the things that I think is happening with a lot of us, some of us are, there is a part…

Okay, so let’s just say in black pen, and I’m not trying to be funny with it, but let’s just say in black pen, we are Christian, but we’re not really walking the walk. 

We may go to church on Sundays, but we are…

“I’m about to convict some people.”

We may go to church on Sundays, but we are, we’re sleeping with our partners, we are masturbating, we are watching porn, we’re drinking alcohol, we’re getting tipsy, we’re smoking weed, we’re cursing, we’re whatever!

All this over here in the black pen but we’re Christians.

Then you got us in the white pen. We are not smoking, we’re not drinking, we’re going to church, or whatever. 

There’s another part of us too, but I don’t have four pencils.  

And then this person in white pen doesn’t know how to operate like doesn’t really know how to function. 

Like, I’m just so heavenly I’m going to heaven. Jesus is coming to heaven! Hope our revival comes! Revival comes! 

But you don’t really know how to live life

You don’t know how to live life on your job without being a weird, spooky Christian saying all are going to hell if whatever. 

Now, then we have, let’s just say we have a Candy Cane here. We’ll just say this is the other person. 

This person is a Christian. They have Jesus. They know Jesus.

They know how to operate their lives without being spooky. 

So that’s the third Christian. 

And then we have the rest of the people, which is the world. 

Which is the pink pencil. 

When I think about what does revival look like?

To me, revival looks like…

This Candy Cane. 

This candy cane that knows Jesus, that loves Jesus, is trying their best to walk in purity, not masturbating, not watching porn, not having sex.

Just trying their best to just walk this walk. 

They’re not perfect, but they’re walking it and they’re walking it with God. 

They’re operating in their lives, their work, their business, and they’re going to church, their ministry. 

They’re just, they’re walking the walk, not perfectly, but they’re walking it 

And they’re walking it so well that people of the world are so drawn to them.

People that you would never even imagine that they can hang out with or are hanging out with are so drawn to them. 

If revival looked like anything or revival is going to come, in my opinion, I’m like, “I think it’s gonna come when you get people that are like the candy cane who is like, Jesus come, Jesus come and I will be Jesus on Earth to people.”

I will live my life in a way. I will love people in a way. I will draw people to me so I can draw them to Him. 

I feel like that is what we should be going for. 

Everybody’s going after whatever it is they’re going after. 

But I’m like, what do I think about what God wants? 

Like the Bible says that He’s gonna come for a church without spot or wrinkle.

So what does that mean? 

That means we’re all spotty. We’re all wrinkly. And we all need each other. 

We’d all need to be walking the walk together. 

I had somebody years ago who inboxed me cause they were so confused that I was a friend with a person who is a Christian but believes in gay marriage.

And I was just like, “I’m sorry, what?” 

“I unfollowed them!” 

How can you be associated with it? 

And I was just like, “I’m pretty sure Jesus was associated with everybody”. 

Just because they are doing whatever, or believe in whatever, does that mean I can’t love them? 

And like, “what do you mean?”

“What are you talking about?” 

This person is trying to be one of those so heavenly-minded, that they’re no earthly good. 

They’re like, they got Jesus and all that, but it’s like, “Who are you helping?”

Yeah, you can call the church. We can call revival fire and fall down on me. 

But do you really need the fire to be on you or do you want the fire to be on everybody?

Do you want the glory and the power and the anointing and all that to be on everybody?

I’m very passionate about this and I can feel the Holy Spirit very strongly on this with me, I get so annoyed every time people say, revival, revival, revival!

And it’s like, “what about you?”

“What’s going on with you in your relationship with Jesus?”

Do you know Jesus? 

How close are y’all? Are y’all real? Are you talking to Him? Are you honest with Him? Are you raw and real and uncut? 

And tell Him how you really feel, how mad you are at Him. 

You know what? 

What is going on with that? With us?

This is one of my rawest episodes besides when I talked about divorce years ago. 

But I really am annoyed by it. 

I’m annoyed by just a revival.

I’m very happy with what’s happening at Asbury University. 

I’m happy that it’s happening there but I’m reminded that He’s doing something there, but He’s also doing something here if we will let Him.

Every time I do a group training class or something, it’s an opportunity for me to say something. 

What was it yesterday? 

I was teaching on TikTok live for business. 

And when I started teaching, I said something and then I stopped mid-sentence and said, “did I just say people need to get delivered and da da da da.”

And I start laughing uncontrollably with so many people watching and then I just start saying it again. 

Yeah, y’all gonna come to me and I’m gonna help you get your money right and get Jesus and get delivered. 

And I just kept saying it and laughing and having a good time with it, you know? 

And every single time I host these big workshops with hundreds of people, I’m always prophesying, right?

I may not say it to the Lord, but I’m prophesying. 

I’m calling people out of things, calling people into things. 

I get to have a massive impact on people. 

If I’m walking with Jesus every single day and walking with people, walking with Jesus every single day, me, and then walking with people versus just waiting for revival.

So, I don’t even know how to end this episode, but this is, this is my frustration with us as the church. 

We’re like, all the way over here that we don’t wanna be tainted by other people. 

And I’m just like, “what is wrong with us?” 

When did we become like that? 

That is all I got from this episode. I’m curious because I’m so passionate about this.

Tell me what you think about this. I’m curious. Again, I am all about the moves of the spirit, the moves of God. 

I’m all about it, but I feel we gotta be more focused on our relationship with Jesus and making sure we’re doing our part and then going out and getting the other people more about that and less about the fire.

In addition, going on a journey with God can prove to be one of the most amazing experiences of your life, but it can also prove to be a little confusing. 

And I want to walk alongside you and help you not only fall more in love with Jesus than you are today but truly discover all that lies within you.
